Pain Point: AI Editing Always Sounds Canned
When you ask AI to help polish text, write posts, or improve emails, the most common result is grammatically correct but tone feels like a manual. Phrases like “excellent quality,” “brand-new experience,” and “worthy of your trust” can fit any company and say nothing meaningful.
The problem isn’t that AI can’t write—it’s that it doesn’t know how “you” usually speak. Without examples, it outputs the safest average tone.
Test: Two Results From the Same Sentence
I tested the same product sentence two ways, as follows:
Control: Asking AI to polish directly
Me: Help me make this sentence more attractive: This product uses the latest technology, has excellent quality, and is welcome to purchase.
AI: ✨ Grand debut! This product adopts industry-leading innovative technology, with excellent quality you can trust. Purchase now and start a brand-new experience!
Experiment: Feeding AI 3 Samples I Wrote First
I first provided 3 short pieces I had written that had a tone I liked, asking it to "remember this tone":
- "I used this thing for two weeks, honestly really good—not some sponsored hype."
- "To be honest, I was skeptical at first, but just ordered another set yesterday."
- "Ask me directly if you have questions—I actually use it myself and wouldn’t recommend it lightly."
Then I gave the same sentence to polish:
AI: I’ve personally used this for two weeks and it’s genuinely good—not just sponsored hype. The technology is truly new, but the point is I dare to recommend it—ask me if you have questions, I’ll feel guilty recommending without basis.
The same original sentence, but the tone completely changes. The key difference is whether examples were provided first.
Method: 3 Steps
- Pick 3 samples: Find things you wrote that you’re happy with in tone. Social posts, replies to customers, or product copy all work. Length doesn’t matter, tone matters most.
- Paste them to AI at once: Add a line upfront: "Remember this tone, use this style going forward."
- Then give the text to be polished: From this point on, AI will apply your tone.
3 Reminders
- Examples should be varied: Don’t make all three the same emotion (e.g., all complaints), or AI will think that’s all you do.
- Remove private info first: Delete client names, phone numbers, or addresses from samples before feeding AI. This is a best practice, not about AI leaking info.
- This method is universal: They work for emails, social posts, product copy, even summarizing meeting tones.
Transparency
This test used a general conversational AI. Different models will phrase things differently, but the gap between “with samples” and “without” follows the same direction. You can copy the two dialogue examples above and try them yourself to verify.
